Quando un montatore di ruote gira un nipplo per aumentare la tensione, l\u2019attrito tra il nipplo e il raggio non \u00e8 l\u2019unica forza in gioco. C'\u00e8 anche attrito tra la testa del nipplo e la superficie di appoggio del cerchio in carbonio. Man mano che la chiave gira, il raggio stesso inizia a torcersi. Questo movimento di torsione \u00e8 chiamato torsione del raggio, o avvolgimento del raggio.<\/p>\n<p>Il raggio agisce come una molla di torsione. Accumula energia potenziale. Quando il costruttore della ruota smette di girare la chiave, quell\u2019energia rimane intrappolata all\u2019interno del raggio. Se la ruota non viene sottoposta a un trattamento di distensione in fabbrica, quell\u2019energia rimane bloccata fino a quando non la si utilizza. Il peso del tuo corpo, combinato con le forze laterali in curva, alleggerisce momentaneamente il carico sui raggi inferiori. Questo improvviso calo di tensione permette al raggio torcito di tornare violentemente al suo stato neutro. Ecco cos\u2019\u00e8 quel \u201cping\u201d: \u00e8 il suono dell\u2019energia meccanica immagazzinata che si libera tutta in una volta.<\/p>\n<p>Ma l\u2019avvolgimento del raggio \u00e8 solo met\u00e0 del problema. L\u2019altra met\u00e0 \u00e8 l\u2019interfaccia tra il nipplo e il cerchio. Durante il montaggio, la testa del nipplo non sempre si appoggia perfettamente a filo contro la superficie interna del cerchio in carbonio. Quando si incontra un dosso, l\u2019impatto radiale costringe il nipplo a scivolare nella sua sede definitiva e permanente. Il nipplo scende, il raggio si allenta e la ruota si sbilancia. Si perde rigidit\u00e0 laterale. Il trasferimento di potenza diminuisce.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Mechanical_Reality_of_Carbon_Spokes_vs_Traditional_Steel\"><\/span>La realt\u00e0 meccanica dei raggi in carbonio rispetto a quelli tradizionali in acciaio<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>L\u2019acciaio \u00e8 un materiale molto tollerante. Ha un modulo di elasticit\u00e0 inferiore rispetto alla fibra di carbonio di alta qualit\u00e0. Quando un raggio in acciaio subisce una leggera torsione, si allunga e si deforma elasticamente. \u00c8 in grado di tollerare un certo grado di disallineamento senza subire un cedimento strutturale immediato. I raggi in fibra di carbonio sono una cosa completamente diversa. Sono incredibilmente rigidi, leggeri e presentano un allungamento quasi nullo sotto i normali carichi di guida.<\/p>\n<p>I raggi in carbonio offrono un rapporto resistenza alla trazione\/peso senza pari. Rendono le ruote incredibilmente reattive. Tuttavia, il loro modulo di elasticit\u00e0 estremamente elevato implica che non tollerano alcun errore di montaggio. Se un raggio in carbonio viene montato con anche solo una frazione di grado di torsione, le sollecitazioni di taglio interne sono enormi. Il raggio tende a distorcersi con una violenza di gran lunga superiore rispetto all\u2019acciaio. Se il nipplo non \u00e8 perfettamente allineato con l\u2019angolo di uscita dei fori del cerchio, il raggio in carbonio subir\u00e0 un momento flettente in corrispondenza dell\u2019interfaccia con il nipplo. Questo rappresenta un punto di cedimento catastrofico per i materiali compositi.<\/p>\n<p>Per comprendere come queste forze interagiscano in condizioni di guida dinamiche, dobbiamo esaminare il <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S187770581000938X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">meccanica strutturale delle ruote delle biciclette<\/a>. Una ruota \u00e8 una struttura precompressa. La sua resistenza deriva dalla tensione uniforme dei raggi. Quando ci si siede sulla bicicletta, i raggi nella parte inferiore della ruota si allentano. Se quei raggi sono attorcigliati, la perdita di tensione innesca istantaneamente il movimento di distorcimento. Questi metodi funzionavano bene per le ruote in acciaio a 32 raggi montate su cerchi pesanti in alluminio. Sono invece del tutto inadeguati per le moderne ruote in carbonio.<\/p>\n<p>Le mani umane non sono in grado di generare le forze necessarie per serrare un raggio in carbonio ad alta tensione. Una stretta a mano pu\u00f2 esercitare una forza compresa tra 20 e 30 chilogrammi. Si tratta di una goccia nel mare. Non \u00e8 sufficiente a superare l\u2019attrito statico tra una sede del nipplo rinforzata in carbonio e un nipplo in lega sottoposto a una tensione radiale di 120 kgf. Spingere sul cerchio con il proprio peso corporeo \u00e8 un metodo inaffidabile. Non \u00e8 possibile controllare l\u2019angolo di applicazione della forza. Non \u00e8 possibile garantire che ogni raggio riceva esattamente lo stesso allentamento. Si tratta di un\u2019approssimazione mascherata da maestria artigianale. Successivamente, inseriamo la ruota finita in posizione orizzontale nella pressa pneumatica. La macchina blocca l\u2019asse del mozzo, lasciando libero il cerchio di flettersi lateralmente.
